Why 1 cement stock did 71% of the NGX's N2.64tn gain, and it was no record

Dangote Cement's 10% jump added N1.87tn, 71% of the NGX's N2.64tn gain on 26 October, while decliners outnumbered gainers and market cap stayed 0.51% below the 28 September peak. STATART puts 65% odds on a higher year-end close.

On Monday 26 October 2026, Nigerian Exchange equities gained N2.64tn to close at N163.16tn, and the All-Share Index rose 4,068.27 points, or 1.65%, to 251,290.54, Nairametrics reported. Dangote Cement hit its 10% daily limit, closing at N1,222.10 from N1,111.00, a day before its Q3 board meeting. Tribune's market report confirms the close.

Was Monday really a record day for the NGX?

The obvious reading is a new all-time high: Nairametrics set N163.16tn against the N163.06tn of 23 September. Its own 28 September report put market cap at N163.999tn and the ASI at 252,635.11, and BusinessDay logged N163.7tn days earlier. STATART arithmetic: Monday's close sits N0.84tn, or 0.51%, below the 28 September peak, with the ASI 1,344.57 points short. This was a recovery, not a record.

How much of the N2.64tn came from Dangote Cement

African Markets lists 16,873.56m Dangote Cement shares, the same 16.873bn used here, and ThisDay's N20.62tn valuation at N1,222.10 implies 16.87bn. STATART arithmetic: N111.10 x 16.87bn = N1.87tn, or 71% of the day's gain. Every other stock combined added N0.77tn, a 0.54% move on a N141.77tn base.

Aliko Dangote's personal stake, derived from his N15.63tn holding at N1,066.70, works out to 14.65bn shares (STATART estimate: value / price), so he alone gained about N1.63tn.

2 limit-ups in 2 sessions is not the normal pace

The stock also rose 10% on Friday, from N1,010 to N1,111, Nairametrics showed, after falling 5.50% to N1,008 on 19 October. STATART arithmetic: 21.0% in 2 sessions, about N3.58tn of value. ThisDay puts its 2026 gain at 100.67% from N609, against 61.48% for the ASI per Tribune. That concentration is structural: the Guardian found 10 stocks held 71.15% of market value on 13 October, and my sum of its top 5 (Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement, MTN, BUA Foods, BUA Cement) is N83.2tn, 51% of N163tn. Dangote Cement alone is now 12.6%.

Signal or noise on 46% lower volume

Volume fell 46.13% to 329.5m shares while deals rose 30.14% to 43,647. STATART arithmetic: average deal size shrank from 18,237 shares to 7,549. Tribune counted 37 decliners against 30 gainers. That is a thin, narrow rally: only 163,732 Dangote shares changed hands on Friday's limit-up, per the same report. Supply is coming, with a London listing planned for November in which owners sell about 10% to raise roughly $1bn. The H1 bar is profit after tax of N638.5bn, up 22.7% (H1 release). At 08:28 WAT on Tuesday, the 27 October Q3 numbers and Tuesday's price were not yet out. I give 40% odds Dangote Cement closes 31 December above N1,222.10.

Who it matters for

  • Retail investors: a 1.65% index day with 37 losers says the median stock fell.
  • Bank buyers: banking index up to 79% this year, yet tier-2 lenders trade below 0.4x book (Nairametrics).
  • Issuers: market cap is 64.2% above January's N99.376tn (ThisDay via allAfrica), with recapitalisation shares and a Dangote refinery offer of 4.1bn shares at N525 (N2.15tn) closing 27 October (Energy News Network).

What would change my mind

  • Dangote Cement back below N1,111.00 within 5 sessions of its Q3 release would mean Monday priced the results in; I would cut my main call to 50%.
  • An ASI close above 252,635.11 with gainers beating decliners would lift it to 80%.

Monday was 1 stock dressed as a record, but the year's trend still points up, so I give 65% odds NGX market cap closes 31 December 2026 above N163.16tn and 55% odds it sets a true record above N164.0tn at any close before then.
